Analysis: Libby case a twist on justice

June 6, 2007

One of the disturbing elements of the reaction to Libby's conviction is that Dick Cheney is saying he hopes his former chief of staff will eventually get off.

Historically, this is a really big deal for a vice president to do. After all, this analysis points out that "While expressing support for I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Cheney and President Bush are also in the position of being officials sworn to uphold the law, running the branch of government that prosecuted Libby."

We realize Cheney may have had his fingers crossed when he promised to support and defend the Constitution, but the citizens of this country take that seriously.

Perhaps presidential scholar Stanley Kutler put it best. "I know of no time in Watergate where someone who was convicted got the warm embrace of those in power," said Stanley Kutler, author of "The Wars of Watergate."
