Bush helps Libby, but hurts himself

July 8, 2007

The screaming parallel of Bush and Libby is Ford and his pardon of Nixon and the backlash from that decision, as this analysis shows.

The decision certainly has political objections and as a matter of law. It was nice to see where some Republicans stood up on principle.

"But some Republicans - including former federal prosecutors aghast at the chilling effect on sentencing guidelines - were also appalled."

In this case, it won't cost Bush an election like it may have cost Ford in 1976. But there is concern on the part of Republicans that this will hurt him significantly.

"He made one of those pure political decisions every President makes that costs you capital," a Bush confidant who talks with him regularly told the Daily News. "The problem is, he didn't have a lot of capital left to spend."
